3 Things To Consider When Choosing Kitchen Worktops

Choosing kitchen worktops for your home can be a tough decision.

There are so many different things to consider. The wrong worktop can potentially ruin the whole look of a kitchen. It's one of the first things your family and visitors will notice when they walk into the room.

Kitchen worktops need to look good, feel good and – preferably – not break the bank.

Here at Spaces Kitchens, we pride ourselves in designing bespoke kitchens that the competition can't, including having one of the widest ranges of kitchen worktops in the business.

This blog post will look at some of these while examining the factors you should consider when deciding on the best kitchen worktop for you.

OK, first things first. When you're choosing the best worktop for your new kitchen, here are some things you should keep in mind.

1. Budget

Kitchen worktops vary in price depending on the materials used and the surface area size you're dealing with.

We can discuss budgets when we're running through the design process, but it's good to have a rough idea about how much you're prepared to spend.

2. Style and colour

When choosing the right kitchen worktops, there are hundreds of materials and colours available.

Do you want a plain or patterned kitchen worktop? A lot of that comes down to personal choice. But our design experts will offer advice on what would work best, likewise with the thickness of the kitchen worktops.

Thinner worktops generally look slightly sleeker and more modern, whilst thicker worktops tend to be used in a more traditional style kitchen.

3. Installation

It is a slightly odd point, but it would be worth considering the installation process when choosing the best kitchen worktop.

For example, will there be enough access to get a massive granite slab into the room, and where will the joins be?

Again, our experts will talk you through this during the design process.

All of our quartz and granite are expertly templated and installed by a local company, and we can offer cutting services on our compact laminate.

Kitchen Worktop Materials

As you probably already know, there are many different kitchen worktop materials to choose from.

Spaces Kitchens has a wide selection to cater for all budgets and tastes.

Let's have a look at some of the most popular kitchen worktop materials we have for you to choose from.

Laminate Kitchen Worktops

Our range of laminate worktops come in a wide variety of colours and thicknesses. You can choose from either 16mm, 25mm or 38mm, and most of these come with either a square edge or postformed profile.

Laminate worktops are often considered the best budget option; they're definitely better than they used to be, so don't be put off as they can mimic other worktop materials and are versatile enough to suit any kitchen style.

Compact Laminate Worktops

Compact Laminates are our most popular work surface for those on a budget. They are solid throughout and don't have any particle board inside like a traditional laminate worktop, making them far stronger and more durable.

The solid construction means that they are waterproof and suitable to use with undermount sinks. You can even cut drainer grooves into the surface, giving this worktop a super high-end feel without the price.

These are a perfect alternative to laminate worktops for a longer-lasting worktop.

Solid Wood Kitchen Worktops

Solid wood worktops can add natural warmth and character. They suit mainly traditional kitchen styles and are incredibly hardwearing. We have a wide range of solid wood worktops to choose from, including Oak, Ash, Walnut and Bamboo. You can also pick from either 28mm or 38mm thickness. Note - Solid wood worktops require a lot of care and attention.

Quartz Kitchen Worktops

Quartz worktops are similar to granite in terms of their luxury appeal. Not only do they look good and are more hardwearing, but are lower on the pricing scale due to the availability of quartz vs granite.

Spaces Kitchens has a wide variety of quartz worktops to choose from, including the brand new Ice of Genesis by COMPAC. Made with ink and inspired by the great ice lakes in the Arctic, ICE OF GENESIS reveals on its surface visual fragments similar to those produced by natural stone.

Quartz is available in 20mm and 30mm. You can see samples of this – as well as all our other quartz samples – in our showroom.

Granite Kitchen Worktops

Granite worktops suit both traditional and modern kitchen styles.

They are very low maintenance, resistant to heat and relatively hardwearing. You can choose between either a classic polished finish or a honed matt look.

We recommend 30mm for granite worktops as, due to its 100% natural construction, any areas where there are cut-outs for hobs or sinks will weaken the section if in 20mm. We have a wide range of samples for you to look at in our Worthing showroom.
